Lab Safety Interpretation


My name is Xing Dongfei. I have been working in Photosynthesis for a year. The work I am in charge of is basically completed in the company's laboratory, so I am very concerned about laboratory safety issues.



On the afternoon of October 24, 2021, a deflagration occurred in a laboratory building at the Jiangjun Road Campus of Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Jiangsu Province. According to the Nanjing Fire Protection Report, 2 people were killed and 9 people were injured in the accident. The cause of the accident is under investigation.

In recent years, laboratory safety accidents have occurred frequently. On March 31, 2021, a laboratory safety accident occurred in the Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a graduate student died on the spot. The cause of the accident was the explosion of the reactor at high temperature and pressure, resulting in the student's death on the spot.

At 9:34 on December 26, 2018, students from the Municipal Environmental Engineering Department of Beijing Jiaotong University were conducting a scientific research experiment on landfill leachate sewage treatment in the Environmental Engineering Laboratory of Building 2, East Campus of the school. Students involved in the experiment died. It was found out that the direct cause of the accident was: in the process of stirring and reacting magnesium powder and phosphoric acid with a mixer, the hydrogen generated in the hopper was ignited and exploded by the sparks generated by the metal friction and collision at the rotating shaft of the mixer, and then caused the magnesium powder dust cloud. The explosion caused the surrounding magnesium powder and other combustibles to burn, killing three students at the scene. The accident investigation team determined that it was a responsible accident, and 12 people including the party secretary of the school were held accountable. At the same time, it was determined that relevant personnel of Beijing Jiaotong University carried out experiments and risky operations in violation of regulations; illegally purchased and illegally stored dangerous chemicals; and did not properly manage the safety of laboratories and scientific research projects.

At about 10 o'clock on November 11, 2018, a laboratory of the Hanlin College of Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine exploded during the experiment. The strong shock wave blew the door of the laboratory, glass slag was everywhere, and many teachers and students in the laboratory were injured.



Accidents like this emerge in an endless stream, and laboratory safety accidents occur every year, so what should we pay attention to about laboratory safety? Below I have compiled some safety guidelines that our labs should follow.

1) Students and technicians entering the laboratory must receive safety education, consciously obey the management, strictly abide by the rules and regulations of the laboratory, and strictly abide by the operating procedures of the instruments and equipment.

2) Before the experiment, read the teaching materials, experiment reference books and related reference materials carefully, prepare the experiment preview report, and do all the preparations before the experiment according to the requirements. Some laboratories are required to wear the necessary normative clothing.

3) After entering the laboratory, abide by the safety rules. It is strictly forbidden to wear vests, suspenders, slippers, high-heeled shoes, etc. into the laboratory; smoking, spitting, throwing paper scraps, and not eating or drinking in the laboratory are strictly prohibited.

4) Before starting any experimental operation, it is necessary to understand all potential hazards in physical, chemical and biological aspects and corresponding safety measures. Before using chemicals, you should first understand the common chemical hazard levels, hazard properties and emergency response plans for accidents.

5) During the experiment, you should not leave your post at will, and pay close attention to the progress of the experiment.

6) When conducting experiments that may be dangerous, take necessary safety measures according to the experimental situation, such as wearing protective glasses, masks or rubber gloves.

7) Operate, debug and test according to the experimental requirements, and record the experimental data truthfully.

8) During the experiment, it is not allowed to exchange or disassemble the experimental equipment at will, and it is strictly forbidden to disassemble the equipment without permission.

9) If an abnormal phenomenon occurs in the experiment, the experiment should be stopped immediately and emergency treatment should be carried out.

10) The chemical waste liquid produced in the experiment should be collected and stored according to the classification of organic, inorganic and highly toxic, and it is strictly forbidden to pour it into the sewers.

11) After the experiment is completed, carefully check the water valve, electric gate, gas valve, etc., and return the instruments, equipment and connecting lines to their original places. Set up tables and chairs and clean the environment before leaving the laboratory. The last staff member to leave the laboratory should complete a thorough examination.

12) It is strictly forbidden to take any items from the laboratory out of the laboratory without permission.

He sat on the ground slumped, but saw a small bottle with cork plugged beside the water pump. A yellowed note was attached to the bottle. Don't forget to refill the water before you leave! He uncorked the bottle and found that the bottle was full of water! At this moment, his heart began to fight—if he was selfish, as long as he drank the water in the bottle, he would not die of thirst and would be able to walk out of this room alive! If you follow the note and pour the only water in the bottle into the pump, if the water doesn't come back, he will die of thirst in this place - should you take the risk?



In the end, he decided to pour the only water in the bottle into the shabby-looking pump, and pumped the water with trembling hands, and the water really poured out! After he drank enough water, he filled the bottle with water, sealed it with a cork, and added his own words behind the original note: Trust me, it really works!

This case illustrates a truth, that is, "Before you get, you must learn to give"!
