On September 28, the 7th "Lunch Academic Salon" of Shenyang Agricultural University Overseas Students Association in 2021 was held in Room 209 of the Library. Professor Li Xiaodong from the School of Animal Science and Medicine was invited to be the guest speaker. With the theme of "Small Crabs, Big Industry", he vividly explained the history and achievements of 30 years of research on crab breeding in rice fields.

In 1990, Li Xiaodong was appointed as the head of the Crab Development and Breeding Station in Dawa County, Panjin City. He and his technicians and workers spent a whole year studying a series of technologies such as temporary breeding of seed crabs, mating and spawning, larval cultivation, and disease control. Problems, overcoming the problem of raising seedlings, filling the gaps in the breeding of river crabs, and summed up and compiled the country's first "Technical Operational Regulations for Industrialized Artificial Breeding of River Crabs". In 1992, he tried to breed river crabs in rice fields, helping farmers to design breeding plans and explain crab raising techniques. He succeeded in raising crabs in rice fields that year, achieving a historic breakthrough in the history of rice planting, and creating "one water for two purposes, one land". The typical ecological model of “double harvest, mutual benefit of rice and crab”, the income of farmers has more than quadrupled than before, and the technology of raising crabs in rice fields has been rapidly promoted across the country.
In 1995, the project "Research and Development of Artificial Seedling Technology for River Crabs" completed by Li Xiao won the second prize of Liaoning Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award, which solved many problems such as low survival rate, high cost, high energy consumption and environmental pollution of factory artificial seedlings. The output of river crab seedlings has been increased from 5 kg/mu to 100 kg/mu, and the price of river crab seedlings has been reduced from 16,000 yuan/kg to 400 yuan/kg, which greatly reduces the farming cost of farmers. This research achievement is known as "the engine of the rise of China's crab industry".
Li Xiaodong led the team to develop a series of technologies that affect the development of the crab industry, such as the integrated technology for water quality control in crab seedling ponds and the directional culture technology for unicellular algae in the ecological nursery pond for crabs. The mathematical model of pH control is based on changes in the situation, and technical measures such as the physical method of grouting are used to control harmful algae. In 1999, "Research on the Theory and Technology of Ecological Seedlings in Crab Soil Ponds" won the second prize of Liaoning Province Science and Technology Progress Award; in 2004, the "Rotifer Soil Pond Sustained High Yield" project won the second prize of Liaoning Province Science and Technology Progress Award, "Open Pond Cultivation of Series Live Foods" "Won the third prize of Liaoning Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award; in 2010, "Development and Application of Key Technologies for Chinese Eriocheir Crab Breeding and Breeding" won the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award. In 2011, Li Xiaodong led the team to cultivate a new variety "Guanghe No. 1" that passed the national examination. This is the first new species in my country's river crab industry. The size of adult crabs has increased by 25.98%, and the survival rate has increased by 48.59%. In 2015, "Breeding and Promotion of a New Variety of River Crabs, Guanghe No. 1" won the first prize of Liaoning Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award.
Li Xiaodong learns while practicing. He received a master's degree from Dalian Fisheries Institute in 2002 and a doctorate degree from Ocean University of China in 2007. His paper "Calcium carbonate supersaturation and precipitation in Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir japonica sinensis) larval ponds in China: Mass mortality, crystal form analysis, and safety saturation index", which solved the mystery of "mutation", was published in Aquaculture. Presented at the New Zealand International Conference on Harmful Algae.
Li Xiaodong founded Panjin Photosynthetic Crab Industry Co., Ltd. in 1999. At present, the company's R&D center has been recognized as a national and local joint innovation key engineering laboratory, a Liaoning provincial key laboratory, a provincial science and technology research and development center, a provincial agricultural industry science and technology innovation platform, In the National Genetics and Breeding Center of Chinese Eriocheir Crab, 46 projects have passed the scientific and technological identification and acceptance. The R&D team has published more than 300 papers, 95 SCI papers, won 1 second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, and the first prize of the Science and Technology Promotion Project of the Ministry of Agriculture. 1 prize, 1 first prize and 5 second prizes for provincial scientific and technological progress, 9 first and second prizes for municipal science and technology progress, 5 national invention patents, and was recognized as a national key leading enterprise in agricultural industrialization, National High-tech Enterprise, National Crab Healthy Seed Breeding Base, National River Crab Improved Seed Farm, National Modern Seed Industry Demonstration Farm, National Popular Science Demonstration Base, Popular Science Education Base, National "Contract-honoring and Reputable" Enterprise, the company's " The "Dong" brand trademark was awarded as a well-known trademark in China, establishing the technological leading edge of domestic rice crab comprehensive breeding and river crab breeding.
In 2015, Li Xiaodong, as a high-end talent, was introduced to the School of Animal Science and Medicine of Shenyang Agricultural University as a professor, doctoral tutor, and leader of aquatic products. Relying on the photosynthetic crab industry company, he established the undergraduate and postgraduate training bases urgently needed in the school's teaching and scientific research. The industry-university-research alliance established the Guanghe Modern Agricultural Industry College, initiated the reform of the school-enterprise collaborative talent training model oriented by industrial needs, and continued to explore in the fields of rice and fishery comprehensive planting and breeding, marine pastures, recreational fisheries, and aquatic animal breeding. The team has nearly three Annually published 26 high-level papers with an impact factor of 76.558.
Li Xiaodong is currently the vice president of the China Fisheries Association and the president of the River Crab Branch. He has been selected as a young and middle-aged expert with outstanding contributions to the National Hundred Thousand Talents Project, a National Leading Talent in Science and Technology Entrepreneurship, and a Leading Talent in Science and Technology Entrepreneurship under the National Ten Thousand Talents Program. National Outstanding Party Worker, National Moral Model Nominee, Good Man in China, Liaoning Provincial Special Labor Model and other honorary titles. In 2008, he was elected as a deputy to the 11th National People's Congress, and in 2012, he was elected as a deputy to the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China.
